April 7, 1862 It's been a year since I joined the infantry , and much has changed. McClellan is no longer the Union General, and the position has now been given to Ulysses S. Grant. He has been doing a good job, and we recently won the battle at Shiloh in Tennessee. It sure was a bloody fight, they say there were over 23,000 causalities and I believe it. Alvin Cobb - letter home

April 15, 1861 My dear Amy Cobb, Training camp has exhausted the life out of me. I can barely walk without my aching leg screaming for rest. There aren’t many my color here but I know that all this training will lead to great victory. After Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers after the surrender of Ft Sumter, many of the men here began to dig in more to the event. The Northern States responded positively to the event but the "border-states" were not to fond and Lincoln received both support and criticism from editorials . I don’t know how much longer I can stand these conditions. The food is almost as dry as the sand by the sea. Despite all the trouble yet to come, I know that I am doing what is right for our people. 3 Union Songs Battle Hymn of the Republic- A patriotic song sung by the Union and people who were for the Federals . It was important cause it gave the soldiers hope. It sent the message that the fighting that the soldiers did was for god, and their fight was righteous and noble. They couldn't lose with god on their side. It gave them hope and the will to fight for something worth while. It was about fighting and dying to make men free. Its like through all the casualties and horror of war they get a glimpse of heaven. When Johnny Comes Marching Home- I was important because it was a song of hope and joy. It talked about the celebration that was gonna happen when the Union yanks came home from battle , after winning the war. There were so many casualties in the war that many times the men didn't come home. Loved ones needed something to cling and a reason to keep hoping everything would be okay. Moral was very important to the infantry and these songs boosted moral. ...
