Alvin Cobb - Hauger

April 19, 1861
Dear sister,
First casualties of war have occurred in the city of Baltimore. Our soldiers from Massachusetts were stopped by a group of citizens on their way to Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, one of my new friend, Ian Sow, was killed along with 10 others. When I heard of his death, I collapsed not knowing what to do with myself. I then came to the realization that most of the men I stand by will not make it through this Civil War. I am scared for the coming of this divided nation but I am more scared of never seeing your face again. I can only pray that God will let me return home in piece but something tells me that will have to be a miracle. I miss you every day my sister.

Love,
Alv
