Melvin Tekell - 3 Union Songs

3 Union Songs

Battle Hymn of the Republic- A patriotic song sung by the Union and people who were for the Federals. It was important cause it gave the soldiers hope. It sent the message that the fighting that the soldiers did was for god, and their fight was righteous and noble. They couldn't lose with god on their side. It gave them hope and the will to fight for something worth while. It was about fighting and dying to make men free. Its like through all the casualties and horror of war they get a glimpse of heaven.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home- I was important because it was a song of hope and joy. It talked about the celebration that was gonna happen when the Union yanks came home from battleafter winning the war. There were so many casualties in the war that many times the men didn't come home. Loved ones needed something to cling and a reason to keep hoping everything would be okay. Moral was very important to the infantry and these songs boosted moral.

Battle Cry of Freedom- This was important because, the song was both inspirational to the billy yanks and dreaded by the rebs. Even the the high ranking confederate soldiers  worried that their men would be discouraged when they heard the Yankee army singing that song when they came into battle. Mentally it was just as effective as the minnie ball and the rifle musket. It was a call to battle and a call to arms. It struck fear in the heart of the confederate soldiers.
