Melvin Thomas - Letter Home

April 15, 1861
Dear Samuel Thomas,

I write to you with my new title Private Melvin Thomas. Lincoln has called for 75,000 volunteers and I am proud to have enlisted in the Union. I hope to help President Lincoln free our people from those Dixie slave owners.  The conditions are more rougher than I thought. Our rations are salt pork, hardtack, and coffee. While I like the coffee I don't like the hardtack. I would rather eat a minie ball from my cartridge box. My infantry group will be drilling tomorrow as the battle approaches. Hope Ma and Mavis and the rest of the family are doing alright. Tell them I'll be home soon.

Sincerely, Melvin
