Corporal Blackburn- 1863 blog

Dear Mary and father,

In January 1 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, making slaves like
us free in rebel states, but I do not think it will work because for the south we are property, but
it’s nice that he tried. In May the Confederates won at Chancellorsville, but paid a price they lost
Robert E. Lee’s second in command, Stonewall Jackson, but here is the thing he might’ve been
killed by his own man. Well the tea has been spilled. In November our president has issued that
there is an established day for Thanksgiving, after the Pilgrims tradition in Plymouth, I feel like
that will kind of join us together as a family. Also before I forget in November 23-25 the Union
forces won at Chattanooga and a bit more and we could possibly split up the Confederacy. Stay
safe.
Sincerely, John B.
